The diamond industry in Surat may not be passing through the most dazzling phases in its history, but a city-based diamond baron has gifted brand new Chevrolet-Beat as incentive to 70 of his employees for achieving their annual targets. Ironically, several of these artisans do not even know how to drive!
“A year ago,we had given specific targets to all our diamond artisans. Of the 2,000 artisans,100 achieved their targets. So this year,we gifted cars to 70,while the remaining 30 were given cash,” said Savji Dholakia. On Tuesday,he surprised all his employees when he gifted the cars to the chosen 70 and up to Rs 3 lakh in cash to the others.
“Thirty of the artisans were given cash, because some of them had to repay home loans, while others wanted to buy gold jewellery for their wives. We hope this would motivate other diamond polishers to do better,” said Dholakia, who has a diamond-cutting and polishing unit at Varachha in Surat.
Rakesh Ramani (28),who got a car, said,”I used to come to work on motorcycle and never thought that one day I will come to the same company in a car. I only used to dream of owning a car. Although,I don’t know how to drive a car,I plan to join a driving school soon.” Ramani hails from Amreli district and has been working at the firm for the past 10 years.
Surat Diamond Association president,Dinesh Navadia, said,”The diamond factory owners give incentives to their employees who do good work, but generally they are paid in cash, depending on the exports and imports of the company. This is the first time in the history of diamond industry that cars have been gifted. The diamond industry is at present running smoothly and this year the industry has done good business compared to previous years.
