With the poll results of Amritsar Municipal Corporation’s ward 3 finally being declared on Wednesday,Raj Kumar Jolly of SAD was declared the winner. Jolly polled 3,138 votes as against his nearest rival,Surinder Chaudhary, who received 2,053 votes.

Notably Chaudhary had gone on to join SAD after leaving the Congress even before repolling was held in two booths on June 15. Congress rebel Dinesh Kumar had also joined SAD.

Ward number 3 had hit the headlines following allegations that EVM machines had been hacked in eight booths. A police probe, however, found that the charges were unsubstantiated. Following the alleged hacking attempt and booth capturing at two booths, where repolling was held later on June 15,the result for ward number 3 was withheld on June 10.

With Wednesday’s results,SAD with 25 seats has now gained an edge over alliance partner BJP,which bagged 24 seats in the municipal corporation polls. There has been a controversy over the mayor for Amritsar, with demands pouring in for a Sikh and SAD mayor for the Holy City, instead of a BJP mayor, which has been the practice so far.
