Faridkot city police has booked a jail warden and an inmate on Wednesday after psychotropic drugs were found in their possession. The warden,Devinder Singh,is alleged to have bought some 900 tablets and capsules to Navdeep Singh,a jail inmate who is serving a life sentence at modern jail.

Navdeep has been booked under the NDPS Act while Devinder has been booked under the Jail Manual Act. The two accused were presented in a local court on Wednesday and sent to judicial custody.

This is not the first time that a jail official has been booked for supplying drugs to inmates. Around half-a-dozen jail officials along with 14 jail inmates have been nabbed on similar cases.

Drug use is rampant in state jails and the business of providing contraband is booming. Many cases have been reported where inmates have either died or tried to commit suicide after their drug supply was cut off by vigilant jail officials. As a result new modern jails have a special de-addcition centre.

Jail superintendent Jatinder Singh Maur said,“The state government has issued strict orders to curb drug use inside jails. There have been cases where relatives have tried to smuggle in drugs. Apart from this we are also keeping an eye on officials and jail staff . Any official caught supplying drugs will face strict action.”
