A rare and critical facial bone surgery was recently performed successfully on a woman at YCM Hospital run by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

Doctors at the hospital said the 48-year-old patient from Ahmednagar, who worked as a stone mine labourer, was hit by a stone during a mine blast around 18 years ago, which caused an injury over her face. This accident developed into a hard growth on the right side of her facial bone (zygomatic bone) and for the last three to four years, she had been experiencing pain in the region. Also, this resulted in facial deformity, said surgeon Dr Yashwant Ingale from YCM hospital.

The patient was admitted at the hospital’s dental department, which is headed by Dr Ingale. “She was diagnosed with zygomatic hemangioma, which is one of the rarest conditions. There are only 20 reported cases in global literature. This condition presents a unique and risky clinical challenge for the operating surgeon. Advanced investigation such as CT Scan, MRI, CT angiography and embolisation was performed following which the decision was made to operate the tumor at YCM hospital. The surgeon’s team succeeded at operating a very rare and challenging tumour of zygomatic bone,” said Dr Ingale.

Besides Dr Ingale, who is a faciomaxillary surgeon, others who performed the surgery included plastic surgeon Dr Deepak Patil and resident doctors Dr Sneha Dabhade, Dr Sanjivani Kadam and Dr Sarika Dhamale.

Dr Tushar Patil, head of the pathology department, played a key role in diagnosing the tumour. All the treatment was done under Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Aarogya Scheme with minimal charges. The rare and unique case of academic interest was performed under the guidance of Dean Dr Rajendra Wable, said Dr Ingale.
