A 30-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide at Khadki Railway Station at 9.30 pm on December 2. It is alleged that she lay down on the tracks on platform number one and waited until a local ran over her thereby ending her life. The body remained unnoticed for at least one and a half hours until a driver of another train passing at 11.10 pm saw it lying on the tracks.

The woman has been identified as Bhimabai Thorat, resident of Kambali Waste, Bopodi. The deceased’s brother, Laxman Hiwale, registered an offence with the Pune Railway Police citing negligence on the part of railway officials.

The woman’s brother told the police that she was disturbed due to family issues and was under pressure from her husband to get money from her parents in Aurangabad.

“It’s shocking how an incident like this could happen. It’s the job of the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) on night duty to continuously scout the area for security reasons. If a woman lies down on the railway track on platform number one, which is the busiest platform in the station, she should have been noticed and stopped,” said a railway official.

GRP officials said that the woman seems to sneaked into the station from an entry gate on the left hand end of platform number one.
“The incident didn’t happen on the platform, it happened on the tracks. We are investigating the case to find out how she sneaked in,” said Police Sub-Inspector Sarjerao Shinde.

“The railway administration needs to build more Foot Over Bridges (FoBs) and underpasses to bring down the numbers. However, vigilance too is an important aspect. If people are able to end their lives right at the platform then it speaks volumes about the state of policing and vigilance,” said Harsha Shah of Railway Pravasi Group.
