A 28-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries on July 16 while undergoing treatment at a hospital a day after she fell off an autorickshaw in Pune on July 15, the police informed Wednesday.

The incident happened near the Navshya Maruti Mandir on Sinhagad Road after the driver, who was allegedly driving recklessly, applied sudden brakes which caused injuries to the woman’s stomach and waist.

The woman was identified as Sapna Ram Rathod, a resident of Kamthe Vasti, Dhayari Gaon who worked at a garment shop. The autorickshaw driver was identified as her friend Kiran Amol Suravse (32), also a resident of Kamathe Vasti.

Rathod’s mother, Ranjana Aade, filed a complaint at the Parvati Police Station and told the police that her daughter was married but lived separated from her husband for years. She added that Rathod and Suravase were going for dinner when the accident took place.

Aade’s complaint read, “I got a call from her (Rathod) phone number that my daughter has suffered an accident. When I met her at the Sassoon Hospital, she informed me that she was in the auto-rickshaw driven by Suravase and was going towards Deccan from Navale Bridge to have dinner. He was driving recklessly and did not pay heed to requests made by my daughter to drive slowly.”

“Near Navshya Maruti Mandir on Sinhagad Road, Suravase suddenly applied the brakes even as the autorickshaw was in a full speed and she fell out of the vehicle and received injuries to her stomach and waist. She was rushed to the hospital in a private ambulance,” the complaint added.

Suravase has been booked under Sections 279 (negligent driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code and Sections 119 and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
