Members of Ganesh Marne gang arrested for dacoity attempt

The anti-extortion cell (AEC) of the Pune police crime branch on Wednesday had arrested six members of the Ganesh Marne gang including the suspects in the sensational murder of gangster Sandeep Mohol,while attempting a dacoity at a jewellery shop in Karve Nagar.

The suspects have been identified as Sameer Mehboob Shaikh (27),Sharad Tukaram Vitkar (26),Devidas Rama Chowgule (28),Swapnil Satish Avghade (25),Shivaji Jayram Rathod (19) and Rakesh Hiraman Chavan,all residents of Karve Nagar.

Acting on a tip-off,a crime branch team led by inspector Kishor Jadhav nabbed the suspects,while they were traveling in a car,near Shabari hotel in Dahanukar Colony around 5 pm. Police have seized sharp weapons,nylon rope and chilli powder from their possession.

The police said that Sameer Shaikh and Sharad Vitkar were booked in the Mohol murder case. They were out on bail. Investigation also revealed the involvement of the suspects Rathod and Chavan in 19 cases of robbery,mobile and vehicle thefts. Seven mobile phones have been recovered from them.

The Pune police have started cracking down on the members of organised gangs who are suspected to create problems during the coming Lok Sabha elections. The crime branch has prepared a list of about 150 persons associated to the major 16 gangs in the city.

“Six more gangs are active in the city. We are keeping a close watch on the gang members. Preventive action will be taken to avoid any foul play during elections,” said assistant commissioner (crime) Sangramsingh Nishandar.

The police are also gathering information about the nexus between political parties and local gangs. “We have intensified action against the goons to ensure free and fair elections. All history sheeters directly or indirectly connected to the gangs are under scanner. We are also updating the information on the gangs on our record,” said deputy commissioner Anil Kumbhare.

The crime branch sleuths are conducting sudden checks in the areas where the gangs are active. In the last week,the police had arrested 11 gangsters as preventive measure. The police are also checking whether the gangsters have stocked sharp weapons and firearms.
