The Maharashtra Government has extended the tenure of the  Koregaon Bhima Commission of Inquiry till May 31. This is the 21st extension granted to the commission investigating the violence that took place on January 1, 2018, during the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon Bhima.

The 2018 violence claimed one life and left several others injured. The Government formed the commission, headed by retired high court judge Justice J N Patel, with former chief secretary Sumit Mallick serving as its second member, on February 9, 2018.

Initially, the commission was given four months’ time to conduct the inquiry and submit its report. But its tenure was repeatedly extended to allow it to complete its work. The last extension granted to the commission was to expire on March 1, 2026.

V V Palnitkar, the commission’s secretary, said, “The state government has passed an order extending the Commission’s period till May 31, 2026.”

Palnitkar said the commission’s hearings scheduled in Pune from February 24 to 27 would be cancelled. “The schedule for the next hearings, likely to begin in the first week of March, will be announced soon,” he said.
The commission has so far recorded the statements of over 50 witnesses, including villagers from Koregaon Bhima and Vadhu Budruk, senior politicians like Sharad Pawar and Prakash Ambedkar, government and police officials, and activists.

The commission is currently examining retired IAS officer and noted author Vishwas Patil in connection with his novel Sambhaji, which is based on the life of legendary king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Patil was summoned by the commission to depose as a witness following an application filed by advocate Mangesh Deshmukh, who represents the Vadhu Budruk gram panchayat in Pune district.

Vadhu Budruk is a historic village (located about 4 km from Koregaon Bhima), known for the samadhi of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Advocate Deshmukh alleges that Patil’s novel contains unhistorical and controversial information about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s last rites. An altercation linked to the controversy at Vadhu Budruk over the cremation of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is seen as one of the triggers for the Koregaon Bhima violence on January 1, 2018.
