Tell us about your school

Abhinav Education Society was established in 1999 by Rajiv Jagtap with a mission to reach out to the under -privileged children and provide them, especially girls, quality education.

Jagtap founded the school in 2003. At that time, this place was on the outskirts of the city, and hence was under developed. The place was remote and mostly underprivileged families stayed in the area. There were no good English-medium schools in the vicinity. Hence,Jagtap began the school in 2003 so that the children of people living in the outskirts of the city could get a decent English-medium education. When we started off,we only had 250-300 students. Now,the school has more than 4,000 students.

We have always achieved 100 per cent results. The student who secured the first rank in class 10 had scored 97.5 per cent in the board exams. This academic year,165 students will take the class 10 examinations. We have smart classrooms, which have technological tools and content providers for teachers and students. To maintain pace with technology,we also have a robotics lab where students are trained to develop robots of their choice. Our language laboratory,a sound-proof room with a capacity to accommodate 30 students, has a microphone, headphones, and sound panels.

What all sports activities does the school organise?

We feel that playing sports is an integral part of schooling. We give special training in archery, volleyball, cricket, chess, wrestling, skating and gymnasium.

We have two guest trainers and eight physical training teachers. In Taekwondo, our students received medals at the national-level in the under 17 and 19 categories. We have won gold medals for kick boxing and received awards at the state-level for martial arts and athletics.

How much importance does your school give to cultural activities?

We celebrate festivals of all religions, hence, instilling feelings of secularism in the students. We have seven teachers who teach various forms of art and music.

We also have an NSS unit in the school that has secured the best unit award of the state. Every year, two of our students are selected for the republic day parade of the state.

What extra-curricular activities does the school organise?

We provide special self-defence training to girls. With the increase in cases of violence against women, the best we can do is to equip our girls. Hence,we provide proper training so that girls can protect themselves. The taekwondo lessons with special focus on self-defence are compulsory for all girls from classes 5 to 10. From the next academic session,we plan to begin the training from class 1.

Apart from this,we also organise various lectures in the school. Police personnel are invited on a regular basis to interact with students and tell them about various kinds of situations of crime. They also teach them about the laws of the land. This is important because if the children are aware of the consequences, they will not be tempted to indulge in inappropriate activities. We have also set apart time for meditation,as it helps children to be calm.

No student can be failed till class 8 but there are students who are unable to be on par with other students of the same class as far as the level of understanding of the different subjects is considered.

Our teachers make special effort to ensure that all students understand their subjects well in every class. For the students, who are a little weak in academics,we hold enhancement classes. This is conducted by our teachers as they know where a student lags in a particular subject and hence during the enhancement classes, they can guide the students as required. Many a times, parents request us to retain students but we counsel them. We try to help the students as much as we can during the enhancement lessons and bring them to a level of understanding of all subjects as expected of students in their respective classes.

We do not have special counsellors but our teachers also play the role of counsellors for the students. The students also feel comfortable with the teachers as they see them every day. Performance of students is affected when they are stressed. Our teachers are quick to find out any problem that children face. We deal with all their problems on a daily basis.

On several occasions, parents approach us when they feel their students aren’t performing well and need help. Most parents have extremely high expectations from their children. Instead of spending time with them, the first thing they do when their children are depressed is to take them to a counsellor. Children need the attention of their parents more than anything else. The number of child counsellors in the city has increased, with parents queuing to meet them. I feel parents should spend more time with their children instead of running to take appointments from counsellors for their children.

What is your vision for your students and school?

We teach students here that life is not what you get,but what you create. Life is not a bed of roses,we have to work hard and create it. We teach them that they are the makers and breakers of their lives.

As far the school is considered,I want it to produce the reformers of the 21st century. Whatever field the students chose to work in,upliftment of the society should be their aim.
