As depleting water levels in dams raised concerns among citizens,the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday clarified that it would not increase water cuts in the city.
The irrigation department had proposed that civic body should lift only 900 MLD water from dams every day. However,the PMC decided to lift 1,050 MLD water for ensuring smooth water supply.
“At present,there is 3.3 TMC water in the dams that supply water to the city. The PMC will get 2 TMC for the city,” said V G Kulkarni,Executive Engineer,PMC.
He said the PMC has no intention of increasing water cuts for now. “We hope that the water will be available till July 15,” Kulkarni said.
Activist Vivek Velankar said the irrigation department has decided to release 1 TMC water for agriculture,which will reduce the quantity of water being supplied to PMC. “The PMC should take up the issue with the irrigation department or the city will suffer,” he added.
