Waste pickers’ children who underwent vocational training felicitated

Hamal panchayat leader Baba Adhav on Thursday felicitated 33 children of waste pickers who finished driving and beautician training.

Hamal panchayat leader Baba Adhav on Thursday felicitated 33 children of waste pickers who finished driving and beautician training as part of the initiative undertaken by Kach Kagad Patra Kashtakri Panchayat (KKPKP) and SWaCH to provide vocational training to these children.

Ten girls who have finished the course and 20 more who are undergoing training will soon be seen driving the ghanta gadis of of SWaCH.

“Originally we started the driving course on August 1 with 10 girls but in a two weeks time 20 more joined,” said Sangita John of SwaCH.

Sunita Yankole,who was forced to become a waste picker despite doing MA and B Ed,also underwent training.

“In the beginning I was scared of driving but after encouragement from others I managed to overcome the fear,” said Yankole. She would now be able to earn Rs 4,000 a month and after working for 6 months with SWaCH she will get a monthly salary of Rs 6,000.

“We will help these students establish their own little units and start their business on small scale,” said John.

All praise for the children,Baba Adhav said,“The PMC is running the health insurance scheme for the waste pickers but PCMC hasn’t undertaken the scheme yet. We have been pushing for the scheme for long but it hasn’t materialised.”

Dr R R Iyer,medical health officer,PCMC,Sopanrao Chavan,president,KKP Urban Credit Bank were also present at the occasion.
