Chants of “Gyanba-Tukaram” accompanied by the beats of taal and the mridang and abhanga tunes filled the air heralding the arrival of the palkhis of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram in the city on Wednesday evening. Lakhs of warkaris arrived with the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi at the Wakdewadi junction at 4.15 pm,delayed by a change from the usual route of the palkhis. The Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi arrived at the junction at 5.45 pm.

The palkhis were welcomed by representatives of the Pune Municipal Corporation led by Mayor Vaishali Bankar. The two palkhis will be in the city for a day before leaving for Pandharpur on Friday.

Notable among the increased number of dindis were the IT Dindi,PMC Kamgar dindi and Shetkari dindi, besides the usual dindis of local saints from various villages that joined en route. “We have been participating in the ‘wari’ for seven years now as the IT dindi, trying to spread awareness on social issues. Last year,we walked with the message related to saving trees. This year,we are spreading the message of saving the girl child,” said Shailesh Khire, one of the members of the IT Dindi that had 125 members walking from Alandi to Pune with the message,‘Mulgi Sukhacha Kalas,Pandurangachi Tulas (girl child is the gift of god)’.

Saving the girl child seemed to be the common theme for a number of other dindis, the PMC Kamgar Sangh dindi for instance that carried the message ‘Mulgi Pahije’ (girl child should be welcomed). In another dindi, the message was to curb child labour. Also noticeable was the India Against Corruption dindi that carried a banner highlighting social activist Anna Hazare’s movement calling it the second freedom movement of India. “The whole country is with us,” said IAC member Balbir Singh.
