RESIDENTS of Gagan Vihar Housing Society in Gultekdi area woke up to a horrific Monday morning when they found that the compound wall of the residential society had collapsed, crushing nine cars parked next to it.
The residents have blamed the recent concretisation done by the defence authorities on the land of the Defence Accounts Department (DAD) quarters, which share the boundaries with the residential society.
Around, 2.30 am residents of Gagan Vihar heard a loud sound and found that the entire wall had collapsed due to heavy flooding. Sanjay Danait, the chairman of the residential society said, “The society is over 13 years old, and we have had a slope on the other side of the wall since the beginning. Things changed few months ago, when defence authorities laid concrete on a major portion of the slope on the opposite side. They removed some of the boulders and dumped them next to the wall. There was no way the rainwater could percolate into land. Also, because no surface passage was provided, the water started accumulating. It finally led to collapse of the wall.”
The residents informed the defence authorities in the morning. Staffers from the Garrison Engineers (GE) visited the spot on Monday evening and said that they would look into it.
An officer from the office of GE (South) said, “We would determine the cause of the incident and required action will be taken.” Danait said that the member of the society would be meeting the Defence authorities and submit their demands on Tuesday.
