Vehicle falls into Indrayani from bridge,rescue operation on

A speeding four-wheeler fell into the Indrayani river after its driver lost control over the vehicle.

A speeding four-wheeler fell into the Indrayani river after its driver lost control over the vehicle which broke through the railing on the new Alandi bridge Tuesday afternoon.

The vehicle was going from Pune to Alandi. The number of people in the vehicle and their identity could not be confirmed till late evening. The fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were involved in rescue operations at the spot,but neither the vehicle nor the people who fell into the river were traced till reports last came in.

After being alerted,police sought the help of the fire brigade. “We got a call from police around 3 pm. Soon,teams of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad fire brigade rushed to New Alandi bridge for rescue operations. Later,NDRF team from Talegaon Dabhade joined the efforts. The rescue operation is on. So far we have not been able to trace the vehicle or people who fell into the river,” said Kiran Gawde,chief fire officer of PCMC.

Meanwhile an autorickshaw driver claimed to have seen at least two persons who fell into the river. He tried to rescue them,but failed as the river was overflowing due to heavy showers.

Police inspector Bapu Deshmukh of Alandi police station said,“So far we do not have any concrete information on how the vehicle fell into the river and how many persons were inside. We do not have any details about the identity of these persons. Whether these persons were going to Alandi for pilgrimage or for other purpose is also not known. Rescue operation is on.”

Firemen used dinghies for search operations.

Later,the NDRF divers were pressed into action.

The divers conducted rigorous searches in the river,but could not trace the vehicle or passengers. The vehicle rammed the railing of the bridge around 3 pm and fell into the water.

Woman dies after tree falls on her

A woman who was injured after a tree fell near Alankar police chowki in Karve Nagar area on Monday evening,succumbed to her injuries at a city hospital on Tuesday. Kothrud police said the victim Shalini Kakade (36) was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning.

Kakade,along Suresh Ratilal Pawar,were going on a motorcycle via Pratidnya Mangal Karyalay road in Karve Nagar,when a tree fell on them around 7.15 pm on Monday. The fire brigade had rescued them by cutting the tree. They were admitted to Dinanath Mangeshkar hospital. Kakade was later shifted to Sahyadri hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Another woman who was on a two-wheeler got minor injuries in the incident.

Wada collapses

An old wada near Mithganj police chowkin in Ganj Peth area of city collapsed on Tuesday afternoon. There were no casualties as the wada was evacuated on Monday. The fire brigade control room got the call informing that the wada had collapsed around 3 pm. Fire brigade rushed to the spot. Fireman Yogesh Chorge said that the second floor of the two-storey wada had collapsed. “The wada was evacuated on Monday. A mobile phone shop in the wada was also evacuated. A tailoring shop in the wada was locked. So there were no casualties in the incident. We helped the tailor retrieve belongings from his shop,” said Chorge.
