V V Natu Memorial badminton tournament returns after six years

The Poona District and Metropolitan Badminton Association (PDMBA) under the auspices of Maharashtra Badminton Association and the Badminton Association of India will organise the VV Natu Memorial All India Senior Ranking badminton tournament,2013,at the PE Society’s Modern PDMBA Sports Complex from July 17-21.

The tournament will be supported by Amanora.

During the first two days,of the 242 playing the qualifying rounds,16 each from women’s singles and men’s singles category will play in the main draw that begins on July 19. The prize money for the tournament is Rs 5 lakh.

“We are happy to host this prestigious tournament after a gap of over six years. PDMBA had hosted the tournament before for 5 years between 2001 and 2006. Only five such tournaments are played in the country every year and the best senior players participate in it as the performance here is considered for national rankings. This help players get selected and represent India in international tournaments,” said Uday Sane,tournament secretary.

B Saipraneeth from the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) has been given the top seeding for the tournament whereas K Srikanth,who won the Thailand Open Grand Prix recently,has been seeded second in the Men’s singles category. PSPB’s Arundhati Pantawane and Air India’s Tanvi Lad have been seeded first and second respectively in the women’s singles category.

In Men’s doubles Kerala’s pair of Alwin Francis and V Diju has received top billing followed by second seeding for K Tarun and Arun Vishnu from (PSPB).

In women’s doubles Sanyogita Ghorpade from Air India and K Manisha from Andhra Pradesh are top seeds,whereas the duo from Karnataka,Varsha Belawadi and GM Nischita have been seeded number two. In mixed doubles,PSPB’s Arun Vishnu and Aparna Balan have been given the top spot with Ram Vijay and GM Nischita following them.
