The University of Punes department of Pali, reeling under a staff crunch for nearly six years, can finally heave a sigh of relief. The state government has issued a resolution approving the recruitment of faculty and the department will now be able to fill up eight teaching and four non-teaching positions.
M A Deokar, head, department of Pali, said,We had been facing an acute staff crunch for the past six years. We are only three people here. The resolution comes as a relief to us. The challenge for us now is to find the right faculty.
The department also needs associate professors and professors. We are awaiting the approval for six such posts, added Deokar.
The department is also planning two new courses once it gets an approval from the Board of Studies,Faculty of Arts and the academic council. We have formed the structure for two diploma courses Applied Mahayana Buddhist Psychology, and Ethics and Socially Engaged Buddhism. We are planning to start these one-year courses with 30 seats each, said Deokar.
While the first course will be art-based and include projects, the other course will include Buddhist as well as socially relevant teachings and traditional scriptures.
Graduates from any field will be eligible for these courses, said Deokar.
