UNO championship: 2 city winners to compete at national finals in Mumbai

The American card game,UNO,is a favourite time pass among old and young alike. Available across the globe,the popularity of the game has resulted in a number of championships and tournaments.

The American card game,UNO,is a favourite time pass among old and young alike. Available across the globe,the popularity of the game has resulted in a number of championships and tournaments. The biggest UNO tournament in Asia titled the Asia UNO Championship is organised annually in Japan since 2006. However,for the first time the championship will be extended to seven other Asian countries to find the ultimate UNO champion.

The regional rounds,which were held in Pune on September 8,saw participation from players of all age groups. “There was no age bar. Anyone who owns a pack of UNO cards was eligible to participate. We invited all our customers to participate in the competition and also updated information about it on social media. Registrations for the competition were done at our store at SGS Mall,” said Sivaraman Balkrishnan,head of marketing,Landmark.

As many as 30 players participated in the competition,of which two city winners — Kushi Patel (9) and Saransh Patil (10) — were selected based on the number of games won. They will represent Pune and compete against winners from Delhi,Bangalore,Chennai and Mumbai at the national finals to be held at Infinity Mall in Mumbai on September 22. The national winners will represent Indian at the Asia finals in Japan later this year.

“I was thrilled to participate and enjoyed the competition thoroughly. My brother taught me to play the game when I was four years old and since then it is our favourite family game,” said Patel.

While Patel said playing against older competitors was a cakewalk for her,Patil admitted he felt like he was going to lose the semi-finals but somehow worked out a strategy to win.
