The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has called for uniformity in the norms for administrative as well as financial systems for the state universities across the country.

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has called for uniformity in the norms for administrative as well as financial systems for the state universities across the country. “Uniformity in norms will be helpful for better governance of the varsities,” M D Tiwari,president of AIU said on Thursday.

Tiwari was addressing a press conference on the eve of All-India Vice Chancellors’ Conference,organised by Bharati Vidyapeeth University (BVU) in association with University Grants Commission (UGC) and AIU. “Governance of Higher Education” is the theme for the conference be held from November 12-14.

“At present,there are so many authorities such as medical council,pharmacy council,AICTE that govern different courses run by state varsities. Though academic governance can vary as per the needs of the stream,there can be common rules for governance of administration and finance. We will be discussing the issue in the conference and send the recommendations to the Human Resource Development Ministry,” said Tiwari.

“The other issues that will be discussed at the conference are management of varsities by vice-chancellors,students these varsities are producing,transparency in various processes,developing content for proper delivery of higher education,norms for selection of vice-chancellors,” he said.

“Various sessions to be conducted during the conference will also deal with the emerging areas such as education as a business,public-private partnership,qualification of teachers,need to develop system to increase mobility of students within the country and direct reach of Central schemes to state varsities without state’s interference,” said Beena Shah,secretary general of AIU,who also present at the conference.

Eminent educationists such as Planning Commission member Narendra Jadhav,Sanjay Dhande,Amit Khare,Arun Nigvekar and former president of AICTE S K Khanna will conduct the sessions.

Around 260 vice-chancellors have so far registered for the conference. The 85th annual general meeting of the AIU will also be held on the sidelines of the conference.
