An undertrial,arrested for possession of marijuana,escaped Friday morning from police custody while undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital. Bundgarden police later arrested him near his house in Bibwewadi.
Kishor Madhukar Londhe of Shelkevasti in Bibwewadi was arrested by anti-narcotics cell of Pune police on July 16 for possessing 2 kg marijuana. The same day he was presented in a city court which remanded him in police custody till Saturday. Police said when he was brought out of the court he complained of stomach and chest pain and was thus admitted in ward number 14 at Sassoon Hospital. Assistant Police Commissioner Mohammed Makandar said,As the accused was in police custody,he was not taken to the special ward for jail inmates. He was handcuffed to the bed and two constables were posted on duty for him. In spite of being handcuffed,Londhe escaped around 6 am when one constable was asleep and the other one had gone to washroom.
Inspector (Crime) Satish Nikam of Bundgarden police station said,We have come to know that Londhe is an addict. As his hands are very thin,he managed to release his hand from the handcuff. Immediately after he escaped,three police teams were pressed into action to search for him.
Police sources said they had a tip-off that Londhe had gone to his home sometime after he escaped. Police came to know that he did not have money and laid a trap near his house in Shelkevasti. He was arrested late in the afternoon when he again came to his house. A case has been registered against him under Section 224 (O bstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the IPC. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Ramnath Pokale,said,A departmental inquiry has been ordered against the two constables – Amit Jamdade and Raju Kadam.
