An inmate of Yerawada jail,Sunil Bhandalkar,29,facing trial in a cheating case, died at Sassoon Hospital on Saturday evening. His family members have alleged that the jail authorities had not informed them about his illness besides delaying informing them about his death.
Bhandalkar,an engineering diploma holder who used to work at Indian Seamless in MIDC area, had been a diabetic for four years. Vishrambaug police had arrested him on October 21 on charges of duping a person in a land dealing at Balewadi. He was first remanded in police custody for two days and then shifted to magisterial custody.
Jail superintendent Padmakar Bhalerao said they had admitted him to Sassoon Hospital after his illness worsened on October 28. Bhandalkars father Vilas Bhandalkar,an attendant at College of Agriculture, said,My elder son had gone to jail with medicines for Sunil, but the authorities refused to take them and said they were giving him medicines. We were not even informed about him being admitted to hospital or then subsequently succumbing to illness. How come a person suffering from illness for so long suddenly dies? He must not have been taken care of properly at the jail. We want a probe.
Bhalerao said,We did inform them about the illness a day after he was admitted to hospital. There is no doubt that he was given all the possible treatment at the hospital. The body was also handed over to them after post-mortem. There was no delay.
As part of procedure,an inquiry will be initiated by the district collectorate.
