The British royal couple,Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles,will visit Pune on November 10 as part of their nine-day visit to the country starting November 6. In the city,they will visit Kirkee cemetery run by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission,Serum Institute of India and the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC).
An official statement released by the Clarence House press office on Wednesday stated they will be given a tour of the cemetery after attending a short act of remembrance. At Serum,the Royal Highnesses will meet the staff and see some of the manufacturing facilities. A reception has also been organised to celebrate business and youth enterprise at The Royal Western India Turf Club.
Dr Cyrus Poonawalla of the Serum institute said the Royals’ visit to the institute will be a great honour for them. “It’s an honour that they want to see the institute and the philanthropic work we do,” he said.
In their most extensive visit to India till date,they will have a broad range of engagements to promote the strong UK-India partnership in key areas such as conservation,education,growing business links,women empowerment and training. They will also have the opportunity to celebrate religious diversity,creativity and the vibrant individual family ties between the two countries,the release said.
The royal itinerary includes official calls on the President and Vice-President of India,meetings with senior business leaders in Mumbai,and receptions for civic,business and cultural leaders in all the major locations of the tour — Dehradun,New Delhi,Mumbai,Pune and Kochi. The Royal Highnesses will also visit a mobile crèche in Mumbai and one of the world’s largest Hindu temples in New Delhi. They will also mark Remembrance Sunday while in India.
The programme includes a visit to the oldest synagogue in Kochi,a boat trip through a mangrove conservation area in Mumbai and visits to three world-renowned institutions in Dehradun — The Indian Military Academy,Forest Research Institute and the Doon School,where local women are being helped to finance their self-employment projects. In Kerala,the Prince will make a trip to an elephant corridor.
