Police investigating the murder of 50-year-old Shobha Masalkar, her daughter-in-law and her two-year-old granddaughter on Saturday arrested Shobhas son for the crime after they found his statements contradicting what was seen on CCTV footage from a nearby building.
Interrogation of Vishwajeet (28) revealed that he had illicit relations with a girl from Jejuri, which was the motive of eliminating his wife, police said and added that he murdered his wife Archana (25),and then his two-year-old daughter Kimaya (2) and waited for his mother to return home. When she entered the house, she locked herself in the bathroom but he broke open the door and killed her too, police said.
The three were found murdered in their flat in Champaratna Society in Udaybaug area off the B T Kawade Road. Another person,Madhusudan Kulkarni (85),who stays in an adjacent flat was found seriously injured.
Vishwajeet who works with a housekeeping company, had claimed that he came to know about the murders after he returned home from a friends wedding.
He had reported the matter to police at 8 pm and told the police that when he left the house at 3 pm,his mother had not returned home. However, one of the police teams investigating the case got CCTV footage that showed she had returned before he left.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Manoj Patil said,Due to these contradictions,we zeroed in on Vishwajeet. Investigations and his interrogation revealed he has an affair with a girl from Jejuri. She told him she will not continue the relation since he is married. Vishwajeet told her he will get rid of his wife.
Patil said,On Thursday afternoon,he had a fight with his wife Archana, following which he attacked her with a hammer in their bedroom. As Kimaya started crying,he strangulated her. This happened sometime between 2.30 and 3 pm. By this time his mother had not come home.
Vishwajeet suspected Kulkarni to have heard something and attacked him too. He then closed the door and sat in the drawing room.
Patil said,CCTV footage shows Vishwajeets mother coming back a few minutes after 3.20 pm. As she entered the bedroom, she started screaming and locked herself in the bathroom as she saw her son coming towards her. Vishwajeet broke open the door and killed her. Police have recovered the hammer and some other evidences.
To project it as an armed robbery,Vishwajeet had told police cash and gold ornaments were missing. Police have recovered cash and ornaments from him. He was arrested on Saturday morning. Vishwajeet was produced in court on Saturday and remanded in police custody till September 12.
