A worker employed by a contractor to demolish a dilapidated wada died after an old peepal tree fell on him at Kasba Peth on Thursday morning. Another worker was injured in the incident.
Fire brigade officials said the tree collapsed after half the 150-year-old wada (cluster of houses) was pulled down, which weakened the base of the tree. The two workers were pinned by the tree and the remaining portion of the wada. Fire brigade officials stated that at around 11.30 pm the tree fell on Dilip Tulshiram Uddan of Tadiwala Road and Bharat Bhalerao of Kasewadi. Tulshiram died sometime later and Bhalerao was injured.
Local police said the wada is owned by the Dere family. Prakash Gore, the station house officer with Pune fire brigade, said,The occupants had evacuated the wada about four years ago because it was dilapidated and unsafe to live in. The owners were getting the wada demolished to develop the land.
The demolition work was being carried out by a contractor.
Gore said,The workers came in the morning and started the demolition work. It seems the demolition of the structure and continuous rainfall had weakened the base of the old peepal tree and it had become unstable. It collapsed. The two workers were trapped between the tree and the wall of the remaining structure. We reached the spot, and extricated them.
Police said Tulshiram succumbed to his injuries sometime later.
An offence may be registered against the contractor for not providing adequate safety equipment to the labourers,a police officer said.
