Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) will add as many as 1,100 CNG buses to its fleet. Of this,500 will be bought on deferred payment basis under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The remaining 600 buses will acquired on rental basis for seven years, the rent for which will be paid from the revenue earned from plying the buses.

A decision to this effect was taken at a board meeting convened by Director Vishal Tambe on Saturday.

“As per various assessments, the city needs more than 3,000 buses to meet the demand. As of now,we have a fleet of 1,800 buses,of which only 1,250 buses are on road at a given point in time. This solves only half our problem. So we decided to add 1,100 more buses to the fleet,” said Tambe.

Tambe said a consultancy firm has been hired for buying the buses and a tender will soon be floated for 500 buses.

Meanwhile, the youth wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) organised a protest demonstration at the PMPML headquarter against the bad condition of some of the buses used by the transport utility.

“We have submitted photographs of buses which are badly damaged. They are prone to accidents and risk the lives of commuters. Today, the authorities promised us that the depot managers will be asked to discard such buses,” said Vipul Mysorekar,Executive President,Nationalist Youth Congress.
