The driver and the cleaner of the trailer were killed after it rammed into the central pillar of the bridge near Urse toll post on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway in the early hours of Tuesday.
Police have identified the victims as Shahid Hadis Khan (26),the driver,and Mohammed Shaikh (30),the cleaner of the trailer. Both were residents of Pen in Raigad district.
Police said that the trailer was transporting metallic coil roll from Mumbai to Pune. Around 5.30 pm,the driver lost control of the vehicle which went on to hit the pillar of the bridge near Urse toll post. The impact was so severe that the metallic coil rolled forward and fell on the drivers cabin. The driver and the cleaner died as they were crushed by the heavy metallic coil,they said.
Police said the coil then rolled for about 100 feet on the road but fortunately did not hit any other vehicle on the expressway. Police teams rushed to the spot and rushed the driver and the cleaner to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. The dead bodies were later handed over to their families.
Inspector Sanjay Nikam of Talegaon Dabhade police station is investigating the case.
