Pune traffic police say that a lot of lapses were observed in safety measures during repairing and construction work undertaken by the civic bodies. In last one year,Pune police have registered around 15 offences against contractors of public works for not following norms.
According to the police,contractors assure to follow safety norms while seeking a no-objection certificate,but often flaunt them.
Vishwas Pandhare,deputy commissioner of police (traffic control) said,It is very important that works undertaken on roads are finished in time. But it is often seen that work go on for a long time.
The contractors awarded contracts are asked to follow safety norms such as putting up barricades and safety bands around the working space,putting up warning signs,deploying staffers to alert drivers. They assure us that these norms will be followed. But there are frequent lapses.
Pandhare said that in the last one year,about 15 offences have been registered against the contractors of work on road for not following norms and in some case causing accidents. These unguarded works can prove to be fatal.
