According to Chef Gordon Ramsay,the best way of becoming a great chef is to work with great chefs. But for thirty budding chefs — contestants in Pune’s edition of the national HyperCITY HyperCHEF challenge — their biggest inspirations came from their home,where they grew up learning the secrets of the kitchen. Although it didn’t hurt that the judge for the day was celebrity chef Shailendra Kekade,host of the famous food show Style Chef. Or that the national finale would be judged by the legendary Sanjeev Kapoor.

Recently hosted at HyperCITY at Kumar PacificMall,the contest’s theme was — Cook what you are best at. Thirty dishes,right from Italian to Indian cuisines were presented by the participants,including lime cheesecake,chikoo roll,bomb shots made of chicken and garlic paste turned into deep-fried balls served with pudina chutney,varied ranges of pastas and amongst other dishes. “All the contestants really amazed me. They have put in a lot of efforts in their preparations. It was not just innovation for the sake of it,it was creative and fresh,” says the judge,Kekade.

But it was the youngest participant,Fiza Mulani who won the contest with a Chicken dum biryani. The second year Bachelor of Commerce student at D Y Patil College,says,“It is an amazing feeling to be chosen from the top 30. I really cannot express it verbally,” adding that she had begun cooking just six months before she decided to take part in the competition. Mulani will represent Pune at the Mumbai finals of the competition where she will be joined by finalists from Thane,Ahmedabad,Bangalore,Hyderabad and Mumbai.
