After styling Kangana Ranaut for Shootout at Wadala,an Ekta Kapoor production, and presenting a collection at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013 last month, designer Rajat Tangri is busy with his next project Mary Kom. Tangri will be styling Priyanka Chopra for Sanjay Bhansalis next venture a biopic directed by Omung Kumar Bhandula based on the boxers life.
For the past two months,he has been busy researching for the project,he says,I met Mary in January. She was very cooperative and shared some of her photographs taken when she was younger. Since the films complete focus is on her,I needed to know what she wore as a child,as a teenager, during her early twenties and later. Mary had left boxing for some time when she got married,I had to know how she dressed during that time, he says.
The designer says that the most integral part of his research was his trip to Manipur. When Tangri learnt that Mary spent her early years in Manipur,he traveled to Imphal,Kangathei and other rural areas of Churachandpur district to document the local culture, people and their daily life. There are so many tribes in Manipur and each has its own symbol and colour palette. Mary Kom belongs to a tribe that descended from the Thai people, he says, adding that while she stayed in Manipur, she would help her parents on the jhum (local crop) fields. She mostly wore a traditional phanek a comfortable wrap-around skirt with a shirt or a top, he says.
The designer stresses that the reason for accumulating so much data is not to create something new but to recreate the look of the past. Sanjay (Leela Bhansali) is very clear on making the film as close to reality as possible, adds Tangri, who is thrilled to work with Priyanka Chopra, who,he feels can carry off any role with ease.
The designer also hopes to style Kom in one of his creations. Being an athlete, the five-time world boxing champion,he says, has always preferred comfort over trendy or fashionable clothes. She has very simple tastes in fashion. Though, now because of all the media attention, she is glamming up a little bit. Many designers want to work with her because she can really carry off so many styles with her athletic structure, says Tangri.
