On the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule,Latatai Bhide,a social worker who had worked for the Parvatinadi Chawl and Sangeeta Khandagle,an athlete were awarded the Gyanjyoti Savitrimata Award. for their services to the underprivileged sections of the society. The function was organised by the Republican Party of India and was held at the first girls school started by her at Bhidewad.
Khandagale has achieved national and international honours despite coming from a poor background. The two women were felicitated during the occasion.
The head of the womens wing of the Republican Party,Jyotitai Lanjhewar and Secretary,Girish Bapat,were the chief guests for the occasion. During the ceremony,advocate Shyam Deshpande,the area president of the party was also felicitated.
Speaking on the occasion Lata Bhide,the recipient of the award said,The Pune Municipal Corporation should bring in a scheme wherein all girls should receive education right upto class twelve. Not only that but the PMC should also help them find suitable professions and help those who are financially challenged to meet their educational expenses.
The programme also saw Girish Bapat speak about Savitribais zeal towards educating women against all odds and said that the educated women of today should take it upon themselves to help women. He also said that he would be ready to help the organisation in any way possible.
