Salman Khan was not the only reason we sat through Bodyguard, his 2011 hit. It was also the return of the pure and pretty salwar that caught the gaze of the fashion industry. Over the years, the salwar was turned into a usually bad clone of sorts — long pockets somewhere, pulled up from the bottom half. The churidar also took over like the superior stepsister and the poor salwar was left alone in the cupboard, taken out on days when there was nothing else to wear. This is set to change in 2012 as the salwar gets prepped up for a come back. Designer Ritu Kumar, the queen of everything traditional says,“The purist salwar is definitely back but with biker shirts or short kurtas with voluminous dupattas. Even the Patiala salwar will do well. I plan to incorporate the plain salwar in my couture collection this time.” From behind the closet its return to the ramp, the salwar’s survival instinct is kicking in this new year.
