Batting for sustainable and inclusive development,Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) director general Sunita Narain on Monday cited the successful campaign in Delhi where public transport such as buses and autos have taken to CNG due to rising air pollution.
Narain was addressing the closing ceremony of the Kirloskar Vasundhara International Film Festival, where she received sixth Vasundhara Samman for exemplary work in environment related issues.
Pune needs to check rising air pollution due to public vehicles which not only causes respiratory problems but may even lead to heart attacks. Think out of the box, change yourself, stand behind the ideas and implement them. The development should be sustainable and inclusive, she said.
Today we have pollution in air and water. Rivers have turned into drains. Mithi and Sahibi rivers are classic examples. Even Mula Mutha in Pune are not far behind.
The nine-day event that was inaugurated on February 18 showcased about 120 films on environment, wildlife, energy, air and water. Sustainable lifestyle for all was the theme of the festival dedicated to environment and energy in India.
Narain said high variations in rainfall in different parts of India were due to the climate changes. She also questioned the role of the relevant authorities who were not doing enough to improve the pace of development.
Actor Anupam Kher was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.
