NCP’s Supriya Sule slams EC over the ‘way civic polls were held in state’

The SEC on Sunday declared that polls of some wards and civic bodies have been postponed due to legal challenges to it.

Raising concern over the way the civic polls were conducted on Tuesday, NCP working president Supriya Sule said the entire election should be cancelled “considering the way it was held with the ruling alliance allegedly using money power in the elections”.

“I don’t know how the State Election Commission (SEC) selectively withheld polls in a few civic bodies days before the actual polling. In a few civic bodies, polling is taking place and in a few it has been postponed. It is unfortunate the way the elections are being conducted,” said Sule, adding they were fighting with the Election Commission (EC) for the last two and half years on the issue of the party name and symbol.

The SEC on Sunday declared that polls of some wards and civic bodies have been postponed due to legal challenges to it. On Tuesday, the Bombay High Court restricted declaration of the results on December 3 of polls held on December 2 and instead ordered that it be declared together on December 21 after the postponed elections are held on December 20.

The EC is an autonomous body and it should be impartial but has been facing allegations of wrongdoing from across the society, the NCP working president said, adding this was harmful for democracy. “All party leaders are speaking against the EC. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been upset and criticised the EC on the way the civic polls were conducted. If the CM is upset then why will the common person believe in the EC,” she said.

“The results of the civic polls will also raise doubts because of the use of money power in the election,” Sule claimed, adding, “It is for the first time that airplanes and helicopters were rampantly used by those in power for transporting their leaders for campaigning across the state. Also, the distribution of cash in civic polls is cause of big concern. Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought demonetisation to finish black money but in Maharashtra where the BJP is in power money is freely distributed during election.”
