The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that chances of heat stroke and other related illnesses are high as Pune district is sizzling under what is technically known as hot and humid conditions.
Shivajinagar on Monday recorded 40.2 degrees Celsius, which is also the highest maximum temperature that the automatic weather station recorded this season. Koregaon Park too was exceptionally hot with the maximum temperature reaching 41.1 degrees Celsius.
The mercury has been on the rise since Sunday, with Monday being one of the hottest days of the season. Lohegaon’s automatic weather station is located within the Air Force station. Given the proximity of the station to the busy Vimannagar area as well as the ongoing construction in the area, this weather station normally reports higher temperature than most other parts. Shivajingar’s automatic weather station is located within the premises of the Agriculture College and it recording above 40 degrees Celsius is indicative of the intensity of heat.
The IMD has warned of successive heat waves in Gujarat, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Madha Pradesh and East Rajasthan. A heat wave is announced when maximum temperature is above 4.5-6.4 degrees in the plains.
While Pune is not experiencing a heat wave, Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD, said Pune is experiencing hot and humid condition, which the central weather forecasting department defines as a condition when the maximum temperature is above 3 degrees and there is moisture in the air.
This condition is supposed to be exceptionally harmful as people forget to replenish their hydration levels. IMD has advised people not to step out during 11am-4 pm as well as to ensure they hydrate themselves regularly. The present condition is expected to continue for the next few days.
