With the less-than-expected turnout in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Pune being partly blamed on problems in the voter list, some aspirants for the assembly elections in the district have taken upon themselves the task of correcting the list. They have embarked upon special voter registration drives.

By this, they are trying to achieve two things. Firstly, the registration drives would serve as a platform to reach out to people and secondly,it would ensure there is no confusion because of faulty lists to prevent people from casting the votes.

“Because of glitches in the voter list,a number of people could not cast their votes in the Lok Sabha elections. There was lot of discontent among voters due to this. Therefore,we decided to carry out a special campaign. We got a list of voters and sent letters to those who had not cast their votes during the LS polls. In the letter,we have appealed to people to exercise their franchise in the assembly polls,if they have missed it during the LS polls, deliberately or unwillingly,” sitting BJP MLA Girish

Bapat, who is eyeing another term from Kasba Assembly constituency, said.

He said party workers in his constituency were visiting households to check the exact number of voters and other details. “I am confident that after our special drive in the constituency, more people would come out and vote,” Bapat said.

Chandrakant Mokate,Shiv Sena corporator, who is planning to contest from Kothrud constituency said,“Immediately after the Lok Sabha elections in April,Shiv Sena workers in the constituency started a drive to correct the anomalies in the voter list. So far,we have gathered a list of about three lakh voters. We are cross-checking the names with those in the government voter list. The drive is also helping us to reach out to people.”

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is also confident of success in the assembly polls, after getting a boost with a considerable share of votes in the Lok Sabha polls.

Vasant More,MNS corporator from Katraj, who is planning to contest the assembly polls, said,“We have prepared a ‘ Jagruti Rath’ (chariot for awakening) to make people aware of the advantages of voting. The chariot will provide door-to-door service to voters to register their names by distributing registration forms to them.”
