On Monday, officers from the state labour commissioner visited the Pune office of auditing firm Ernst and Young to inspect their office. This follows the death of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil’s death which her family said was as a result of exhaustion. Additional labour commissioner Shailendra Pol, said they would send their report to the state labour commissioner within a week, which would then be forwarded to the central government.

“Our officers had inspected the premises and made some observations. The company has been given 7 days to reply to those remarks, which will be forwarded to the state commissioner. The report will subsequently be sent to the Centre,” he said. The inspection comes after the central government and National Human Rights Commissioner stepped in.

Anna had collapsed and was subsequently declared dead on arrival at a Pune hospital on July 20. Her mother had written an open letter to the India head of EnY which talked about the unhealthy working atmosphere which Anna was subjected to. The company had denied the charges.

Following the letter going public, questions about the working practice in the auditing firm had arisen which led to the sou motto intervention by the Centre. Last week, NHRC had asked the Centre to look into complaints made by Anna’s mother and the circumstances of her death.
