Ankita Gund,an upcoming wrestler from the city,sponsored by sports NGO Lakshya,will be now backed by Sri Balaji Society for the next one year.
17-year-old Ankita,who trains at Jog Maharaj Vyayamshala in Alandi,recently bagged the sub-junior national gold in the 40 kg category for the third successive year. Gund was also crowned the champion in the 2011 Asian Cadet Championship.
Daughter of wrestling coach Dinesh Gund,Ankita has been selected to represent India in the World Cadet Wrestling Championship which will be held later this month in Serbia.
As part of the sponsorship committment,Sri Balaji Society will provide financial support to Gund for foreign training,equipment and other needs.
Ankita,currently in Lucknow for the preparatory camp for the World Championships,said,The support from Lakshya and Sri Balaji Society will not just boost my confidence,but provide the necessary support to train abroad to qualify for major international events – including the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Lakshya deputy president Vishal Chordia said that the NGOs plan for Gund was to ensure that the wrestler would be provided the required equipment as well as ancillary support. We prefer to work in tandem with Dinesh Gund and are looking to provide a nutritionist and other facilities. We will also be sending her abroad for training.
