Four-time champion Pankaj Advani blanked former Asian billiards champion Devendra Joshi to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the National Snooker championship at PYC Hindu Gymkhana on Thursday. Having taken the first two frames 50-36,80-39,Advani took the third by 20 points before compiling a break of 75 in the fourth and eventually the final frame.
Others to progress into the last 16 were top seed and defending champion Aditya Mehta,Brijesh Damani,Siddharth Parikh and Manan Chandra.
The most engrossing match of the day was between PSPBs Sourav Kothari and Karnatakas M Yogesh Kumar. They traded the first six frames before Kothari found a break of 46 to take the decider 84-17 and end a match that lasted well beyond four hours. Kothari had to rally after losing the first frame 35-51 and he replied well by scoring a break of 53 to take the second frame 65-8. Yogesh won the third 61-48 before the Kolkata-based Kothari brought things back to parity in the fourth. The seesaw pattern repeated itself in the fifth and sixth frame before Kothari held his nerves and won 35-51,65-8,48-61,65-21,55-73,61-11,84-17.
In the bottom half of the draw,last years runner-up Alok Kumar defeated Sunil Kumar,while Kamal Chawla,the IBSF world no 3 enjoyed a 4-0 win over Sundeep Gulati.
All-India junior tennis tournament from Monday
Over 210 players from all over the country will take part in the PCLTA All-India Junior National Talent Series tennis tournament organised by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Lawn Tennis Academy. The five-day tournament begins at the MSLTA School of Tennis Courts,Balewadi,on February 6. The age categories in the event,for boys and girls,are under-10,12 and 14. The organisers have received entries from Andhra Pradesh,Gujarat,Tamil Nadu,Delhi,Karnataka,Haryana,Mumbai and Pune.
