Sports Round-up: Sharvil,Shrishti win under-18 titles

Nagpur’s Sharvil Navghare and Pune’s Shristi Dass emerged winners at the Rachna Lifestyle National Ranking Talent Series Tennis tournament.

Nagpur’s Sharvil Navghare and Pune’s Shristi Dass emerged winners at the Rachna Lifestyle National Ranking Talent Series Tennis tournament,which concluded with two all-Maharashtra finals at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana on Saturday. In the boys’ under-18 final,unseeded Sharvil scored a 6-4,4-6,7-5 win in 3 hours over second seed Jayesh Pungaliya,breaking in the 12th game of the third set after sharing the first two sets. In the girls’ under-18 final,sixth seed Shrishti upset city-mate and top seed Kanishka Chawla 7-5,6-1.The total prize fund for the event was Rs. 50,000. The winners won 25 ranking points,the runner-up 20 points,the semifinalists 15 points each and the quarterfinalists 10 points each.


Boys: Sharvil Nawghare (Mah) beat Jayesh Pungliya (Mah,2) 6-4,4-6,7-5; Girls: Shrishti Das (Mah,6) bt Kanishka Chawla (Mah,1) 7-5,6-1.

Hard-fought win for Royal Eagle

Royal Eagle completed a thrilling 2-1 win over First Timers in the Challenger Group quarterfinals at the PDMBA Inter-Club badminton league on Saturday. Eagle started shakily,with Sudarshan Bhutada losing his men’s singles match in three games to Akshay Gadre 21-11,12-21,15-21. The doubles pair of Makarand Chitale and Anup Jamdagni brought them back to parity with a straight games win over Akshay Gadre and Omkar Joshi,leaving the tie in the balance. The final doubles tie was a humdinger. Bhutada and Chetan Shah took the first game 21-17,but Apoorva Javadekar and Ashish Kulkarni hit back by winning the second 23-21.

The deciding game was closer still,with a lengthy sudden-death period that ended with Bhutada and Shah prevailing with a 25-23 scoreline.In the semi-finals,Royal Eagle will be joined by Kawasaki Nike Strikers ‘B’,Apte Badminton Club and Invincibles,who recorded wins in their respective quarterfinals. Kawasaki Nike Strikers ‘B’ beat Deccan Tigers 2-0 (Akhilesh Joshi beat Atul Biniwale 21-18,21-19; Akhilesh Joshi/Saee Purandare beat Jayant Parakhi/Anil Patgaonkar 21-19,21-19).

Apte Badminton Club beat Baddicts 2-1 (Ajinkya Dharmadhikari lost to Akshay Jogdeo 11-21,21-16,11-21; Samruddha Rathod/Chinmay Vaidya bt Akshay Jogdeo/Nitesh Khatpe 21-10,21-9; Chinmay Salpe/Santosh Ubale bt Aditya Dharmadhikari/Manjusha Sahasrabuddhe 21-16,21-9).Invincibles beat Fat Boys 2-1 (Abhishek Swadi bt Rohit Natu 21-12,21-10; Chinmay Deval/Gaurav Thote lost to Sangram Patil/Parag Tulpule 27-25,17-21,19-21; Rohan Bhuskute/Abhishek Swadi beat Vikrant Patil/Rohit Velhal 11-21,21-18,21-10).
