sports round-up: Poona Club to host PGTI Championship

The Professional Golf Tour of India will stage its PGTI Players’ Championship at the Poona Club Golf Course from April 17 to 20.

The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) will stage its PGTI Players’ Championship at the Poona Club Golf Course from April 17 to 20. A Pro-Am event will be held on April 21 after the end of the championship. The event carries a total prize purse of Rs 20 lakh with the winner taking home Rs 3.2 lakh.

Major names participating in the event include Mukesh Kumar,C Muniyappa,Manav Jaini,Vijay Kumar,Vinod Kumar,Sanjay Kumar,Shamim Khan,Abhijit Singh Chadha,Gaurav Pratap Singh and Raju Ali Mollah. The local challenge will be led by Gurki Shergill,Rajiv Datar,Jaideep Patwardhan,Aditya Bhandarkar,Pravin Pathare and Sachin Nigade. Announcing the event,Padamjit Sandhu,director,PGTI,said,“We are delighted to be back in Pune,which is one of the fastest-growing golfing centers in the country. Our partnership with the Poona Club Golf Course seeks to further popularise the sport in this city by staging professional tournaments such as the PGTI Players Championship.” Jaideep Patwardhan,chairman,Poona Club Ltd. (Golf),said,“The tournament brings high-quality professional golf to Pune and provides an incentive to youngsters to take up the sport. The golf course is in excellent condition and we look forward to an exciting week of golf.”

Mr India,women fitness contest
from April 18

Around 400 men will take part in the 52nd Mr India Championship and around 60 women in the 7th Women’s Fitness Championship starting April 18. The weigh-ins on April 18 and the pre-judging contest on April 19 will be held at Balewadi Sports Complex while the final will be held at Baburao Sanas Ground on April 20 from 4.30 pm. The men’s events will comprise nine weight categories – 55kg,60kg,65kg,70kg,75kg,80kg,85kg,90kg and 100kg,while the women will take part in two height categories – above and below 163cm. Teams from 29 states and sports boards will take part in the event,which is being held under the aegis of the Indian Body Builder Federation. The winner stands to win a cash award of Rs 3 lakh.

20:20 Cricket: Sahasrabuddhe’s knock goes in vain

Bhushan Sahasrabuddhe’s knock of 83 went in vain as Gymkhana Stars lost to Bank of Baroda by eight wickets in the Summer League 20-20 cricket tournament on Monday. Batting first,Gymkhana Stars posted 174 for four in their 20 overs but half-centuries from Preetesh Hadke and Keval Kadam took Bank of Baroda to their stiff-looking target with nearly three overs to spare.


Dilip B CC 112 for six in 20 overs lost to Janata Sahakari Bank 113 for two in 17.4 overs (Pranav Mehta 47 not out,John Waghmare 25).

Aaloch Cricket Club 152 for five in 20 overs (Devdatta Natu 65,Madhur Karad 37,Sagar Bhargude 26 not out) bt Melbourn Cricket Club 85 in 17.2 overs (Yuvraj Kadam 32 not out).

Gymkhana Stars 174 for four in 20 overs (Bhushan Sahastrabuddhe 83,Milind Aayre 37) lost to Bank of Baroda 180 for two in 17.1 overs (Preetesh Hadke 67,Keval Kadam 56 not out).

Sujiv CC 135 for nine in 20 overs (Vishal Bhairamadikar 72,Jeevan Virkar 25,Vishal Mohal three for 31) lost to Minto CC 137 for six in 18.2 overs (Suhas Aaglave 37,Sahil Govitrikar 32 not out).
