With various sports teams climbing the merchandising bandwagon, supporting your favourite team has just got a notch better
Do the words The Red Devils,The True Blues,The Reds ring a faint bell in your mind. Well,in addition to the fact that they are nicknames of players of some of the best-known football clubs from the English Football League, they are also nicknames given to supporters of the teams who dress up in jerseys of the same colours.
Sport merchandising might still be an alien concept to many cities in India but it is fast catching up with people who wish to show their support for their favourite teams by donning jerseys of their favourite players. Says Yusuf Chowdhry of Nike Sports Station,Whilst stores abroad would stock the team jerseys of various football and basketball teams they were reluctant to do the same here because the jerseys were highly priced. However,as of now as the consumers spending power has increased they have launched them here too.
Elaborating on the same,he says,It was why the Indian cricket team (which is also sponsored by Nike) merchandise, which includes the official team jersey, the pre and post match shirts and other merchandise like caps, bags and water bottles are selling like hot cakes. With the national team performing so well, people love to don the jersey during match days to showcase their support for the team. In fact,we have placed a third order for a new batch of jerseys for the growing demand. Recession or no recession, people are definitely hooked onto wearing their national team colour on their sleeve.
The national cricket team jerseys are priced at Rs 2300,whilst those of football teams like Manchester United,Arsenal FC,Liverpool FC,Chelsea FC,Bayern Munich and Real Madrid FC are priced between Rs 2800- Rs 3200. The post match shirts of these teams are available for Prices varying from Rs 1500-Rs 1900. The IPL (Indian Premier League) Cricket team jerseys are available for Rs 1400.
Justifying the cost of these jerseys,Victor John Peter, manager, Adidas store in Camp says,As far as football goes the Liverpool and Chelsea football team jerseys sell off very quickly. When these jerseys were first launched in the market the sales were slow owing to the high pricing but now they have picked up. Most of the crowd that pick up these jerseys are usually youngsters but working professionals who follow the sport also dont hesitate before buying it. Moreover these jerseys are authentic replicas of those worn by the players on the field so it gives youngsters another reason to buy them-to show their support towards their favourite football players.
The Manchester United football team jerseys sell the fastest as far as football teams go. A probable reason for this is the fact that they are currently the league leaders in the premier league and European champions. One can also get the jersey customized by getting the number and name of their favourite player on the jerseys. Another reason as to why people buy them, adds Chowdhry.
Soham Thorat,an engineer and avid football enthusiast, says,My favourite team in the English Premiership is Arsenal. I had got my first Arsenal Jersey from abroad a couple of years back because back then they used to not stock them here. However I recently got their new team jersey a couple of months back from one of the stores in the city.”
