The Southern Command Gold Cup Race 2013 will be conducted at Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC),Race Course today. A grade III race,it is traditionally conducted on the second Sunday of September each year.
As per tradition,Lt Gen Ashok Singh,General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Command will give away the Cup and other prizes to winners. The race will also be attended by a number of officers and their families.
The event will begin at 2.30 pm with the Field Marshal Manekshaw Memorial Trophy race. The Southern Command Gold Cup Race will begin at 4 pm. The race will be preceded by scintillating and daring displays by the brave soldiers of the Indian Army. There are several events – a fly past by helicopters of the Army Aviation,a sky diving display,a para-motor display and a tent pegging display by various teams of the Army. The race promises to be a once in a life time experience for all who attend the event, said a press release issued by the Press Information Bureau,Defence Wing.
According to the release,this race was first held on September 4,1948 as the Southern Command Cup race. The race became a listed race in 1986 and was accorded the graded status in 1999.
