Funny characters of Lapataganj to weave social messages, raise issues into their version of Ramlila
In the current episodes of Lapataganj on SAB Tv,it is Ramlila time. But care is being taken not to make light of the epic, rather make it a vehicle for socially relevant messages.
In our version, you will see Lord Ram addressing issues such as lack of civic amenities, said actor Rohitashv Gaur, who was in Lucknow on Wednesday along with co-actors Anup Upadhyay and Shubhangi Gokhale.
The popular series is based on the writings of satirist Sharad Joshi and it is in the rightness of things for the plot to border on current topics.
I get to play Mareech, the golden deer and later Kumbhkaran, said Mama of the drama,Upadhyay,an Etah native, who started his acting career under the tutelage of theater doyen Habib Tanveer.
Gokhale, who plays Mausi will don the garb first of Rams step-mother Kaikayi and then demoness Shurpnakha, the sister of Ravan, while Gaur, the commonman Mukundilal is appropriately cast as Ram in the village roadshow.
I am from Andhra Pradesh who got married to a Maharashtrian (late Mohan Gokhale of Mr Yogi-fame),playing an eastern UP villager. When I was offered the role,I suggested improvisation in the way of speaking in a sing-song manner that was silly and funny and at the same time not stereotypical or unnatural. The ploy seems to have worked, going by the popularity of the show and the character, said Shubhangi, who is heavily into Marathi theatre.
We are giving all 30 days of the month to the show. None of us has time to be on any of the reality shows or comedy circuses. Personally,I dont even want to be any of these, said Gaur, who has done bit roles in both Munnabhai movies and is waiting to shoot for the third part of the franchise too.
