Dream on
Final Year students of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) will be presenting a production of A MIdsummer Night’s Dream on today and tomorrow,7 pm onwards at the FTII Campus. A romantic comedy by William Shakespeare,the play has been directed by Rudrodeep Chakrobarti. This is first play of the batch of 2007-09 and revolves around the adventures of four young lovers,a group of amateur actors and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest. The story takes place in Midsummer and is a complex farce featuring Hermia and Lysander and Helena and Demetrius. Their romantic intrigues are confused and complicated still further by entering the forest where Oberon,the King of the Fairies and his Queen,Titania,preside. Puck (or Robin Goodfellow) is a major character who is full of mischief and tricks. Other visitors to the enchanted forest include Bottom the weaver and his friends Snug,Snout,Quince and Flute the amateur dramatists who want to rehearse their terrible but hilarious version of the play Pyramus and Thisbe.

Hope floats
The seventh Pune ki Asha Awards will be given away at a special function at the Balgandharva Rangmandir on March 25. These awards are given to youngsters below the age group of 35,who are making a name for themselves with their extraordinary talent. This year,the awards will be given to singer and poet Sandeep Khare,floriculturist Manish Jain and Katkar brothers Kailash Katkar and Sanjay Katkar,both techies. The award will be in the from of a cash prize of Rs 5000 and a trophy. While Kailash Katkar is the chief executive officer and chairman of the Board of Directors of Quick Heal Technologies,Sanjay Katkar is the chief technical officer and technical director of Quick Heal Technologies. He is the co-founder of Quick Heal Technologies and responsible for the development of anti-virus product range Quick Heal on all the major platforms. Manish Jain is the managing director of Kumar Properties plant biotechnology business,while Sandeep Khare is a distinguished Marathi poet,songwriter and singer best known for his albums Diwas ase ki and Ayushyawar Bolu Kahi. Apart from this a special feature of this award ceremony is the Ashadeep Award,which is bestowed on a person who is a guiding force and an inspiration to many with his/her work. This year,the Ashadeep Award will be given to Dajikaka Gadgil for his years of excellent work in making the 175-year-old PNG brand stand tall and create a beautiful bond of love and trust with Puneites. Pune ki Asha awards were instituted 10 years ago by the Asha Foundation to recognise the contribution of young achievers to the society. Dr Narendra Jadhav will preside over the function and Prakash Paigude will interview the awardees. Deepak Shikarpur will be the special guest for the occasion.

Creative minds
The St Mira’s Girls Secondary School held their Annual Art and Craft Exhibition on March 20. Kiran Jotwani,headmistress of the school,reiterated that all exhibits were solely made by the children,with no involvement of the parents at all. The students used innovative and eco-friendly ways to make use of waste items. Ice-cream sticks that would be thrown away were used to make exquisite lamps,and other show-pieces. Plastic straws that last for only sips,were used to make pretty dolls. In the science section,a live model of a volcano was displayed with the help of chemicals. A live demonstration was also done by a group of students on the Warli Artform and geometric designs in white on a red earthen background were used.
