Brief encounters
Wednesday,July 22 saw theatre enthusiasts flocking to The Corinthian Club for yet another Mahesh Dattani play, brought to the city by Entre Nous. Presented in association with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, the play Brief Candle, produced and directed by Lillete Dubey, had a talented line-up of Zafar Karachiwala,Joy Sengupta,Amar Talwar,Suchitra Pillai,Manasi Parekh and Satchit Puranik. Despite sterling performances by the experienced cast and an unusual plot that revolved around a hospital and hospice for cancer and the terminally ill, this was one Dattani play that received mixed reactions from the audience. A play within a play,it juxtaposed a situation where the characters in the play await their flight departures, delayed due to a storm and end up in entangled situations, sometimes comic and sometimes poignant, with their actual lives at the hospice. A story with huge potential,it seemed to have been let down by a far too scattered narrative, making the play too abstract for the comfort of many. Nevertheless, its always a treat to watch the line-up of Dattanis artistes, who as usual, put up their best show, making it worth for those who had braved the rains to be at the venue.
