In the month-long drive to check illegal sex selection in Pune region,six sonography centres have been sealed in the jurisdiction of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC),and show-case notices have been issued to seven in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits and eight in rural areas.
Dr Vinayak More,district civil surgeon,said the drive is part of the state-level action against misuse of ultrasound centres and implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act.
In rural areas,the health authorities inspected 240 sonography centres in 13 talukas and slapped notices on eight for non-maintenance of records. Notices were also issued to seven Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) centres. A total of 151 centres were inspected in the tehsils,More said.
According to Dr Kishore Pakhare,in charge of the inspection drive in the PMC limits,91 sonography centres were examined from June 4 to June 30. Of these,six were sealed for non-maintenance of records. In some cases,the doctors themselves appealed to the civic health authorities to seal them as they were not being used. A total of 184 MTP centres were inspected. While notices have been issued to a couple of them for non-maintenance of records,one was sealed for not getting its MTP centre registered. These cases will now be forwarded to the district MTP committee.
In the PCMC area,health authorities inspected 142 sonography machines and four centres were issued notices for not maintaining records. Of the 58 MTP centres,seven were issued notices,Dr Anand Jagdale,PCMC health chief said.
