As many as six people died and 20 others were injured in a road mishap on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway near Khalapur in the early hours of Monday. Police said that the victims were travelling to Mumbai in a tempo that overturned at around 2 am.
Police have identified the deceased as Vishal Bhagva Chamar (26), Shaila Kailas Bangali (32), Haisa Bhagva Chamar (45), Gava Vaiti (40), Datta Vaiti (35) and Dheeraj Patil (30), all residents of Versova in Mumbai. Police said that the victims had come to the Ekvira Devi
Temple in Karla for pilgrimage on Sunday.
After offering prayers at the temple, they were returning to Mumbai in a tempo of the Vesava Fishermen Co-operative Society. The tempo driver lost control over the vehicle due to which it overturned and went on to hit the railing of the Pune-Mumbai expressway after crossing the Madap tunnel near Khalapur.
A team of highway safety patrol, Khalapur police and other agencies rushed to the spot. They admitted the victims to a hospital in Panvel. An offence was registered at Khalapur police station.
