Sharad Pawar hints at retirement from parliamentary politics, bats for Yugendra in Baramati Assembly constituency

Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024: Sharad Pawar said he wants to pass on the baton of Baramati's progress to Yugendra Pawar for the next 30 years.

Hinting at his retirement from parliamentary politics and inclination to pass on the baton to the youth, Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday sought votes for the party’s Baramati candidate, Yugendra Pawar, in Maharashtra Assembly elections.

“I have contested 14 elections from Baramati. You always elected me. It was because of you I became legislator, minister, then chief minister four times. Then, you sent me to Lok Sabha as MP a few years ago. I decided not to contest general elections and became Rajya Sabha MP. I am an MP in Rajya Sabha, and my term will expire in one-and-a-half years. I am now thinking of not to become a Rajya Sabha MP again,” Pawar, 83, said in the Supe village in the Baramati Assembly constituency.

Pawar said that though he will not be involved in electoral or provincial politics, he will continue his public work. The NCP (SP) chief said, “I handled the development and progress of Baramati for 30 years and then passed on the responsibility to Ajit Pawar for 30 years. This should continue. So, we need to give responsibility for the next 30 years to youth leadership to carry forward the legacy of public service in Baramati. Thus, Yugendra needs to be elected for this purpose in the Assembly election.”

The NCP (SP) has pitted Yugendra against his uncle Ajit Pawar, the seven-time sitting MLA from Baramati. Ajit Pawar, nephew of Sharad Pawar, broke away from the undivided NCP and joined the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra last year and became deputy chief minister.

The Assembly poll in Baramati will be the second tussle within the Pawar family after the Lok Sabha election earlier this year. That time, NCP (SP) candidate Supriya Sule defeated Sunetra Pawar, wife of her cousin Ajit Pawar.

Sharad Pawar said it was during his tenure that he launched irrigation projects to tackle the drought situation in Baramati, but unfortunately, those who took over from him did not do much to complete the projects necessary for farming in the region.

“I also managed to bring industries to the region to ensure employment to youth,” he said, adding that he started educational and other organisations to provide quality education and improve farming in the region.
