Health Management Information System (HMIS) data analysis of the number of births registered at various state centres has shown a slight improvement in the sex ratio at birth. As per the data collected from April to September this year,the state sex ratio at birth has climbed to 892 girls/1,000 boys as against last years July figure of 861 girls/1,000 boys. Pune shows a slight increase from 839 girls/1,000 boys in July last year to 880 girls/1,000 boys this year,while the highest figure has been registered in Satara with 919 girls/1,000 boys this year as against 862 girls/1,000 boys last year. Kolhapur stands at 903 girls/1,000 boys and Thane at 910 girls/1,000 boys. State health officials said while the cumulative figures reflect a positive trend,the impact of the drive towards strict implementation of the PC-PNDT Act will take a couple of years.
