Keeping alive its tradition of rewarding staunch loyalists, the Shiv Sena on Monday announced former deputy mayors Chandrakant Mokate and Mahadeo Babar as their Assembly poll candidates for Kothrud and Hadapsar respectively. The party has fielded Kalpana Adhalrao-Patil,wife of Sena MP Shivajirao Adhalrao-Patil from Ambegaon that in all likelihood will have state Finance Minister Dilip Walse-Patil as the NCP candidate.

The Sena is contesting 13 seats in the district including four in the city.

Babar was confirmed from Hadapsar with no other major contender challenging him. He is likely to take on Congress leader Balasaheb Shivarkar and MNS candidate Vasant Chavan.

However, there was a tussle for the Kothrud ticket between Mokate and Shyam Deshpande. Mokate won by virtue of his being in the Shiv Sena since the beginning whereas Deshpande had drifted from the BJP to the Sena.

The Sena had managed to win only one seat in the city in 2004. Sena legislator Vinayak Nimhan,a staunch supporter of Narayan Rane, had recently joined the Congress and was seeking the party ticket from Shivajinagar.

The Shivajinagar seat will be contested by Sena ally BJP. The Sena is finding it difficult to find an able candidate for Pune Cantonment and Wadgaonsheri. The Sena is said to be waiting for rivals to announce their candidates, before deciding its candidate.

The Sena,by fielding Adhalrao-Patil’s wife from Ambegaon, has in a way challenged Walse-Patil on his home turf because Adhalrao-Patil and Walse-Patil had been taking on each other since the Lok Sabha polls to establish their supremacy in the region. Adhalrao-Patil had won the Lok Sabha polls by defeating Vilas Lande of NCP in Shirur constituency.

The Sena has given Rajendra Kale the ticket to contest Baramati assembly seat and he will take on NCP leader Ajit Pawar, nephew of party chief Sharad Pawar. The other Sena candidates in the district are Bhimrao Bhosale from Indapur,Ashok Khande-Bharad from Khed-Alandi,Vijay Shivtare from Purandar,Sharad Dhamale from Bhor,Shreerang Barane from Chinchwad and Sulbha Ubale from Bhosari.

Alliance partner BJP has announced the candidature of city unit chief Girish Bapat from Kasba Peth though it is undecided over its candidates for Khadakwasla,Parvati and Shivajinagar.
