A day after a murder convict escaped from the Yerawada open jail,authorities said that the security will be stepped for the vast open jail premises. Officers said open jail does not have the same security cover as the central prisons have,but repeated cases have prompted them to strengthen security at the jail premises.
On Thursday,convict Raju Borghe,escaped from the open jail when he was working in the fields. Borghe was convicted by the Kalyan Court for his wife’s murder. Superintendent of the open jail,R V Kamble,said,“We immediately registered a case at Yerawada police station and the police have launched a search operation to nab him.”
In a similar case,On May 22 last year,Saleem Gulab Pathan,a man serving life term for murdering his wife had escaped from the Yerawada open jail. “We will increase the number of security personnels to strengthen security. We will take necessary steps to ensure more vigil,” said Kamble.
“We must understand that the open jails are not meant to have security like the central prisons. Inmates are transferred from closed prisons to open jails based on their behavior and their ability to get absorbed in the society. It also must be kept in mind that we have a huge premises. It is very difficult to keep a watch on the entire area.” he added.
